Social Design of Learning
A couple years ago, Tony O'Driscoll told me that the biggest threat to the learning profession was Google. Certainly Google provides a mechanism for quickly accessing published information, but it is only a cog in a revolutionary new learning construction kit.
Accompanying Google (or Bing perhaps), are a myriad of other tools including AIM, Ask, Backflip, BallHype, Bebo, Blogger, Blogmarks, Brightkite, Buzz, Delicious, Digg, Diigo, eHow, Facebook, Fark, Faves, Favorietes, FriendFeed, Kaboodle, kIRTSY, Link-a-Gogo, LinkedIn, Live, Mister Wong, Mixx, Multiply, myAOL, MySpace, Netvibes, Netvouz, Newsvine, Plaxo, Print, Propeller, Reddit, Simpy, Slashdot, Sphinn, Spurl Squidoo, StumbleUpon, Stylehive, Technorati, ThisNext, Tumblr, Twitter, TypePad, UStream, WordPress, Y! Bookmarks, and Yardbarker to name just a few. There are many, many more and the list is growing everyday.
So how do we master the right tools to do the job? We don't. Typically, we are masters of few, users of many. Many people know how to upload a video; few know how to construct a video that is effective for learning.
