The Road to Learning: How Long Does it Take?
So how long does it take to create effective training? It's like anything else, it depends on where you start and where you're going .
Estimates vary, but here are some good rules of thumb. All of these can vary significantly depending upon the completeness of specifications; tools employed and level of competency with the tools; access to subject-matter expertise; and many other factors.
| Type of Training | From | To | Average* | Key Considerations |
| Classroom Instruction | 30 | 50 | 34 | The key is to get and keep learners engaged. This is also the biggest challenge for new designers and instructors. Sometimes, an engagement specialist can make a big difference for even experienced training professionals as they redesign courseware with which they are very familiar. (Familiarity sometimes stiffles creativity.) |
| Standard e-Learning | 100 | 400 | 221 | Using traditional development tools and methodologies, times varies largely based on the level on interactivity desired. Many courses developed with traditional tools can be developed with rapid e-learning tools and approaches for a fraction of the cost. |
| Simulation | 500 | 1500 | 750 | Simulations are usually only necessary for the most critical skills development, where making mistakes can be catastrophic but is an important part of the learning process. |
| Rapid e-Learning | 4 | 40 | 8 | Depends largely on where you start and can vary widely within the range. The low-end presumes you're converting an existing instructor-led course with an effective, existing PowerPoint and adding little interactivity. The high-end presumes you want a very robust, engaging learning experience and you're starting with basic information but little else; these solutions may include soft-skills scenario-based learning and simulations. Innovation is a key ingredient to successful use of tools in this category. |
